Case study: How would you react to injury at school

Mrs Williams : Good morning madam.

Proprietress: Good morning ma’am. How are you and the home?

Mrs Williams : Fine thank you. And yours?

Proprietress : We are equally good. To what do we owe you this unusual visit? (smiling)

Mrs Williams : Thank you, Mrs Mark, I came to lodge a complaint. Am not happy at all this morning with your services. My child got injured close to the eye by another kid in her class, I mean my baby in Pre-school the previous day and I wasn’t informed neither did I get a call from anyone to sympathize with her in her two days absence from school since that day. I don’t think that is fair enough.

Proprietress: Oh goodness, am sincerely not aware of this, let me call the teacher so we can get her explanations but before that, my sincere apology, I really need to thank God that it didn’t affect her eyes. Oh my! (showing deep concern)

Mrs. Williams : No you should talk to the teacher about it privately, you don’t need to do that in my presence. Just caution her professional ethics on child handling. I know how difficult it is to take care of just one child let alone 10 and above. She is trying but I think she is a bit relaxed. I will find time to talk to her later. Just to encourage her and make her realize she doesn’t need to let down her guard.

Proprietress : Oh Mrs Williams, thanks for your understanding, I will really caution her and also keep an eye on the class with her. Hope your husband will also understand and forgive us?

Mrs Williams : He was mad and wanted to come and see you by himself but I know how mad he can get so I decided to but Pls, spare us a next time because I will let him and you may not like his approach.

Propriestress : Oh! No way, we will be extra careful with all the children, it won’t happen again God helping us.

Mrs Williams : Alright, let me run along, I have some stuff to take care of (smiling). Have a great day

Proprietress : OK ma’am, am more than grateful for your maturity and understanding. Bye ma.

Now Proprietress and teacher

Proprietress: Mrs. Tuyi, do you know why Sade was absent from school for 2 days?

Mrs. Tuyi : (looking down) Yes ma’am.

Proprietress : Tell me, what do you know?

Mrs. Tuyi : She was injured by Asabe mistakenly ma.

Proprietress : How?

Mrs Tuyi: They were taken to use the bathroom during short break, all the girls first and later the boys so they could wash their hands and take their snacks. While they were returning from the bathroom, Asabe’s shoe lace was off and she mistakenly stepped on it, she stripped forward, trying to gain balance, she pushed Sade who staggared forward, crashed into the door. I ran towards them and tried to save the situation but I didn’t do much. Sade hit the door handle at that time. Immediately, I took her to the first aider, she applied Robb ointment on it to avoid swelling. Later in the day, she seemed OK and played till closing, so we didn’t think it was needful to tell the mom when she came to pick her neither did we think of telling u too. Am sorry about all these ma.

Proprietress : That doesn’t sound nice at all. The little girl must have suffered so much pain because she needed some pain relief. I need you to be more careful when handling the children. Always inform the cleaner to be at the toilet while you stand at the door and send them out one after the other. And from time to time, check their shoe laces and fit them properly. Pls, do not let this repeat itself again. I also need to talk to our First – aide, she needs to go for training, she ought to use ice-block not Robb for cases like that.

Mrs Tuyi : Ma, I am very sorry for the trouble, it won’t happen again, I felt so sad, when I realized Sade had been down for 2 days because of that. If it were more than that, I would not have forgiven myself.

Proprietress : Good you feel that way, keep a close tab on them and be quick to report any hurt or mishap, a stitch in time saves nine. Put a call through to Mrs Williams and apologize for the pain that her child went through. I will do same later in the day too.

Mrs Tuyi: Certainly ma, am very sorry, I will be more careful next time. I promise to make it up for Sade, I will let her know am sorry for her pain too.

Proprietress : OK good. Pls, be extra careful and always ask for assistance with the children anytime you need it.

Mrs Tuyi: OK ma, thank you for believing in me ma, I will do my best. Pls, apologize to Mr and Mrs Williams on my behalf too ma. It was a costly mistake, I admit.
