Promoting resilience in students

Resilience is the ability to cope with negative life events and challenges. A lot of students with anxiety and depression.

Building resilience

Resilience is not a genetic trait, it is derived from the ways that children learn to think and act when faced with obstacles large and small.


Ways by which educators can promote resilience


Model learning from mistakes


Failure is a huge part of success. It helps in becoming a resilient person. Teachers should help create an avenue in the classroom for students to know that failure, disappointment, set back are honored parts of learning.

Educators should help the student to know they had once made mistakes too, had failures most especially the funny ones to help their students become resilient.


Encourage responsible risks


Teachers should help by recognizing and complimenting responsible risks taken. For instance, a student who is courageous enough to answer a question even if it’s not correct should be complimented to foster resilience in the student


Set strong goals


Educators should help students to set smart goals, personal goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and also timely. When a child meets up with the goal set, this achievement should be celebrated.


Pointing out difficult emotions


Educators should help students recognize and name emotions right from elementary school through high school.

There should be emotional check-in daily in class. This helps them to identify emotional triggers and begin planning to respond with good self- management strategies
