PROS AND CONS OF BOARDING SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA 🇳🇬

We can’t keep counts of how many ways parents should employ for the well-being of their children in boarding school but they shouldn’t ignore their diligence as their children are of utmost concern, they shouldn’t be treated with any form of levity.

Schools now have different models of convenience for parents and one of them is the boarding facility.

Most privately owned schools in the country have employed this boarding facility as a way of camping students within the school premises even after closing hours.
Considering how guardians are occupied with daily activities, it provides little or no chance for them to get involved in their children’s academics giving room for lapses and loopholes.

PROS

Boarding school has exposed students to both positive and negative developments. Starting with the positive developments, we can identify that boarding house has enhanced:

  • Students to socialize and mix freely amongst their peers
  • Encouraged interpersonal relationships
  • Boost in academic activities/ academic excellence
  • How to take proper care of body and other belongings
  • Habit to save, regulate spending and consumables
  • Extracurricular activities/holistic development
  • Discipline
  • Independence
  • Time management
  • Confidence/Self reliance
  • Respect for senior colleagues and those in higher authorities

CONS

On the other hand, boarding house has nursed lots of negative developments which most students still deal with even after leaving school.
These developments have caused more havoc than good which most parents have failed to realize in time.

1. It nurses immorality and several illicit activities such as; drugs abuse, homosexuality, masturbation, sexual immorality, and abuse
2. The quality of boarding schools vary which might affect the children
3. The hike in tuition fees cannot be compared to that of day schooling
4. Bullying which is hard to weed out has done more harm than good. Most senior students take advantage of their younger colleagues leaving them no choice but to adapt to the lifestyle.
5. Some children take time to blend in and adapt to their new environment. Some don’t adapt at all and this could cause them to be homesick frequently.
6. Extortion and exploitation by housemasters and mistresses
7. Poor hygiene could lead to random infection or illness
8. Some of these children live in fear or pretense of their mates, teachers, seniors, and housemasters/mistresses
9. It causes loneliness and low self-esteem
10. Stress
11. No freedom
12. Academic pressure
13. It breeds favoritism which could damage relationships amongst students
14. It causes a bridge/gap between parents and children relationship
15. Most children might not have friends outside their domain as they’re used to a particular set of people.

WAYS TO AVERT/MANAGE THESE CONS IN BOARDING SCHOOLS

However, there are ways these damages can be avoided; meaning that parents and guardians must do the following before sending their children off to boarding schools:
– Instill discipline in them and always remind them of how they are brought up
– Trust them
– Keep tabs on their classroom performance. Keep in touch with all the teachers and follow up on their children’s progress.
– Be alert for any sign of unhappiness or worry look either on their faces or through their actions and behaviors.
– Always communicate with the school management about their needs.
– Take their complaints/ concerns seriously
– Take time to explain to your child why you think sending him/her to a boarding school is a good idea. Be sure to assure them that you are not abandoning them.
