UNDERGRADUATES ADMISSION INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

The University of Toronto is a public research-intensive university located in Ontario, Canada. The institution is driven by innovation and invention. It has three campuses: Downtown Toronto (St. George), Mississauga and Scarborough.

So what are the application requirements?

The university of Toronto offers over 700 undergraduate courses. The application process for undergraduates starts around September and the deadline is usually till early November while the final deadline differs depending on the subject/course. It is advised that application for admission is submitted early as spaces fill up quickly and programs may close before the published deadlines.

  • An application fee of CAD180 is to be paid (through OUAC).
  • The minimum admission requirement for Nigeria is the West African Examinations Council Senior School Certificate(WASSCE).
  • A Nigerian may qualify for exemption for the English language requirement. Note that eligibility for an exemption will be determined after the application for admission and relevant supporting documents (i.e: transcripts) have been submitted.

As a prospective student, know that the only way to get in is to have above-par scores and well-written application documents such as Statement of Purpose and Essays.

The application process for all undergraduate courses is handled through the OUAC website (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre). Before registering on the OUAC website, ensure that all documents are complete and as per requirements. If any document or score is missing, they will reject the application.

Steps to take when applying to the University of Toronto.

  • Visit the school’s website: https://www.utoronto.ca/ and find your desired course from the list of courses.
  • Look up the University’s undergraduate admission requirements based on your educational background. In addition to meeting the general university admission requirements, you may need to present specific subject prerequisites, or submit a personal profile or statement of interest.
  • Find out which application form you should use and follow the steps on the appropriate online application.
  • Apply to Scholarships. Check to see scholarships you might be eligible for.
  • Submit all required documents. Visit the university’s website for detailed information about the required documents and document deadlines.

Details About Applying to the University of Toronto

Make sure to include an active email address and an up to date mailing address as correspondence may be by email or post.

Approximately one week after the application is received, an acknowledgement email with the applicant’s JOINid/UTORid, the University of Toronto applicant’s number, and full information about the next steps in the application process.

One’s eligibility for admission will be considered once the complete academic record and any additional information requested by the division to which a prospective applicant has applied has been received. A full documentation of all secondary and post-secondary studies the applicant has attempted must submitted. Also, be sure to submit all the required documents in advance of the published supporting document deadlines.

In considering students for admission and scholarships, the University reserves the right to give preference to students whose grades represent their first attempt.

The institution has the right to require recent, government-issued photo identification for verification purposes.

The University of Toronto does not interact with agencies (educational “agents”) in order to recruit students to undergraduate programs.

How is your application considered?

The institution first verifies that you meet the University’s general admission requirements. These are basic requirements that all candidates must meet to be eligible for University of Toronto admission consideration.

Secondly, the institution assesses whether you meet program-specific requirements for your intended area of study. They confirm if you have the necessary subject pre-requisites and have completed any required personal statement, supplementary application or audition?

The University of Toronto does not have the capacity to admit all applicants who meet the minimum general and program-specific requirements. They seek to admit the best possible students on the basis of academic performance and potential, and will select students for admission based on competitive strength.

Generally, the following documents are required by the university but may vary depending on the course and programme selected.

For undergraduate applicants, the following documents are required to be directly submitted through the OUAC website:

  • Transcripts for all secondary and post-secondary studies
  • English language proficiency scores (IELTS or TOEFL or C1: Advanced or C2: Proficiency)
  • Notarised translations of any academic document which is not in English or French
  • Resume/CV may be required
  • Financial documents
  • Scholarship letters, if any

Canadian Visa Application

A study permit is required to study in Canada. Your study permit is not a visa.

These are the documents required to obtain a study permit:

  • Proof of acceptance

Your school must send you a letter of acceptance. Include the original or electronic copy of your letter with your study permit application.

  • Proof of identity

When applying for your study permit, you must have:

a valid passport or travel document

A copy of the information page to be uploaded for online application. If you’re approved, you must send your original passport to the Canadian Embassy.

The name and date of birth of the person should be written on the back of each photo.

  • Proof of financial support

You must prove that you can support yourself, while you are in Canada.

You can prove your funds with:

Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you’ve transferred money to Canada

Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution

Proof of a student or education loan from a bank

Your bank statements for the past 4 months

A bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars

Proof you’ve paid tuition and housing fees

A letter from the person or school giving you money or

Proof of funding paid from within Canada, if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program

Other documentation that may be required are:

  • A letter of explanation

This letter helps the visa officer to understand you the applicant and your goals. It explains why you want to study in Canada and that you understand your responsibilities as a student

You should include this letter if you decide to apply for a study permit, even if you don’t have to get a study permit for your program

  • A custodian declaration (minors only)
  • Other supporting documents required.

Specifications of passport-sized photographs

  • Photographs must be printed on quality photographic paper.
  • The photographs must be identical and taken within the last six months. They may be either black and white or colour.
  • The photographs must be clear, well defined and taken against a plain white or light-coloured background.
  • If the photographs are digital, they must not be altered in any way.
  • Your face must be square to the camera with a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling, and with your mouth closed.
  • You may wear non-tinted prescription glasses as long as your eyes are clearly visible. Make sure that the frame does not cover any part of your eyes. Sunglasses are not acceptable.
  • A hairpiece or other cosmetic accessory is acceptable if it does not disguise your normal appearance.
  • If you must wear a head covering for religious reasons, make sure your full facial features are not obscured.

Photograph and head size specifications

  • The frame size must be at least 35 mm x 45 mm (1 3/8″ x 1 3/4″).
  • The photographs must show the full front view of the head, with the face in the middle of the photograph, and include the top of the shoulders.
  • The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm (1 1/4″) and 36 mm (1 7/16″).

Crown means the top of the head or (if obscured by hair or a head covering) where the top of the head or skull would be if it could be seen.

If the photographs do not meet the specifications, you will have to provide new photographs before your application can be processed.
